What I think of the Kill Limit situation:
I actually think we made the situation slightly worse by setting the max kills to 40, then allowing urinal. If the maximum number of kills was still 60, people in those urinals would have to compete to get to 60. Now that people know they cannot get over 40, people are just giving up when they get to 40 and letting other players catch up to 40. It’s not that this has much of an impact on who makes it to the top, but now it seems that people at the top of the leaderboard aren’t even competing against each other, but rather working together. This is a step in the wrong direction.
Putting the kill limit back to 60 with urinal isn’t necessarily a solution though. Players are not necessarily going to compete harder if the kill limit is 60; people can still work together and focus on 2 or even 3 accounts to get 60 kills every round. If players don’t want to completely donate, they can still rotate to be the recipients of those 60 kills every other round or so, and probably still end up averaging more than 40 kills per round. I’m not saying that this 6-man rotation would definitely happen if the kill limit is 60 - it is harder to pull off then the 40 kill cap situation - but it is certainly possible.
Problems with Competitive Seasonal Leaderboard in a Nutshell:
So having a competitive seasonal leaderboard for kills incentivizes people to play mostly urinal, since that is the best way to get kills. Only people with Lab Pass and a circle of friends to play with will have access to this mode of game; this will dampen the motivation of other players to climb the leaderboard themselves.
We should remember that urinal was not created because it focuses on a certain aspect of the game that is necessary for actual gameplay; it was solely created as a way for players to get kills. Urinal is not the map that we want to be encouraging everyone to play since it contributes very little to the actual game itself.
Basically, we have two mediocre scenarios. In one, everybody is trying to play urinal in a mad race to the top. Honestly, this isn’t too bad if a lot of people are excited and playing; I’m willing to overlook the perils of having Urinal at the top of the food chain. But in the other scenario, which I believe is more like what we had in Season 2, the leaderboard only manages to excite a few people to race to the top. This is the worst of both worlds: not only are a few players getting rewarded for playing a map that has little to do with the actual game itself, but also the leaderboard fails in its attempt to get people to play.
Well, in the current state of the game, banning urinal is pretty much out of the question. Not only is it a pain to moderate, but it also really is not a bannable offense. The game lets you play urinal, and we cannot penalize from exploring the game and taking advantage of things that can be done legally.
What we can do about it
But let’s remember that the competitive seasonal leaderboard is not the only thing to do in Stick Arena. In the coming seasons, let’s lessen the prizes on the competitive seasonal leaderboard, and open up more events, like playdays, and tournaments so that players can be rewarded for their gameplay.
What I think might help in the future
The only thing that will truly address this issue is an actual update to the game, or at least changes. At this point, as players (and moderators) we can only see how many people do not like the way things work with Urinal, voice our opinions, and let XGen decide if they want to make actual changes in the game to address this concern.
One idea they could try is making a game mode called “competitive”, which is a randomized cycle of classic maps. Every season, only kills obtained from this “competitive” mode will count towards the leaderboard. However, this idea should only take place if cumulative legacy stats and current season stats become two separate entities. This way, all kills will count towards one’s stats, but if one wants to work towards the leaderboard, they need to play in maps that do a better job representing the gameplay that Stick Arena has to offer.
Let me know what you guys think of what I had to say here. Let’s kick off 2018 with a constructive discussion and hope for the best.
